Rock Around the (Lego) Block Tonight

Hey so I found out there's Lego Rock Band! The reviews seem pretty decent but more importantly there's some neat tracks included:

  • Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr
  • Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
  • Crodocile Rock - Elton John
  • The Final Countdown - Europe
  • Free Fallin' - Tom Petty
  • Let's Dance - David Bowie
  • We Are The Champions - Queen
  • We Will Rock You - Queen
  • Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & Can't think of anything other than American Psycho when I hear this song

Anyway, I thought it was neat!

2010 - The Golden Years

It's the Golden Anniversary of the Canadian Bill of Rights!
And in a related note these movies came out:
Ocean's 11
The Apartment
La dolce vita
G.I. Blues
The Magnificent Seven
These losers were born; Oliver Platt, Sean Penn, Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Moore, Kenneth Branagh, Tilda Swinton, Daryl Hannah, Hugh Grant; which kinda could equal us losing Clark Gable.

Some of these songs have probably gone way beyond "Gold" status but either way if they hadn't they have in a different way now:
Elvis the Pelvis - Are You Lonesome Tonight
Elvis the Pelvis - It's Now or Never
Bobby Darin - Beyond The Sea
Sam Cooke - Chain Gang
Connie Francis - Everybody's Somebody's Fool
Ray Charles - Georgia on My Mind
Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely
The Drifters - Save The Last Dance For Me
Mark Dinning - Teen Angel
Chubby Checker - The Twist
The Ventures - Walk, Don't Run
Johnny Burnette - You're Sixteen (and I guess he liked underage trim)
Now, I'm not really into theatre but Bye Bye Birdie, Camelot, and Oliver! all debuted in 1960.
Also debuting in 1960 were Frank Zappa, Michael Hutchence, Adam Clayton, Bono, Steve Vai, Roger & John Taylor(duran duran), Vince Clarke, & Chuck D.

As there was no video gaming 50 years ago, I'd like to just give a shout out to the Flintstones, Coronation Street, and The Justice League of America, which are now all Golden!

Also some guys named "The Beatles" formed 50 years ago, as did The Temptations.

Oh, And "The Pill" also is now 50 years old. Time to get some new techniques!

Coming in 2010: the list for 2011 featuring, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Donkey Kong & Slayer!

2010 - 30

Thirty years ago! Wow, were you even born yet? Maybe you were in diapers? Regardless I'm sure a lot of these things still impacted your life. On with the movie stuff first:

Movies celebrating their 30th anniversary of release:
The Empire Strikes Back
Private Benjamin
9 to 5
The Blues Brothers
Raging Bull (really?...ordinary people? really academy?)
Friday the 13th
The Fog
The Shining
My Bodyguard
Used Cars
Prom Night
Altered States
The Elephant Man
Flash Gordon
Heaven's Gate is now a 30 year old joke so stop it already
The Gods Must be Crazy and racist
Popeye (that's just for you jeff)
You can thank 1980 for Zooey Deschanel, Christina Ricci, Kristen Bell, Macaulay Culkin, Jake Gyllenhaal is only fucking thirty?
And you can curse 1980 for taking away Peter Sellers, Mae West, Alfred Hitchcock, and Steve McQueen.

Top albums thirty years ago?
AC/DC - Back in Black
The Clash - London Calling (US)
Blondie - Autoamerican
U2 - Boy
Bryan Adams - Bryan Adams
The Cure - Boys Don't Cry
The Psychadelic Furs - The Psychadelic Furs
The Talking Heads - Remain in Light (once in a lifetime)
Prince - Dirty Mind
The Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue (She's so cold!)
Devo - Freedom of Choice (whip it etc...)
Queen - The Game
The Gap Band - The Gap Band III
The SOS Band - SOS
Stevie Wonder - Hotter than July
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Kurtis Blow - Kurtis Blow (these brakes are 30 years old!)
1980 was quite a year for music. Sadly one of the most impactful musical occurrences ever happened in 1980 and of course that would be the murder of John Lennon. Other sad times at ridgemont high include: Bon Scott's "death by misadventure", and John Bonham's death results in the break-up of Led Zeppelin.
Well were there any musical good news thirty years ago? Only if you consider the formation of Depeche Mode, R.E.M., Bad Religion, ABC, Violent Femmes, New Order, Eurythmics, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Minor Threat good news!

If you were hanging out in arcades in 1980 you're a liar because no one over 32 reads this! But you probably eventually had these games on crappy console versions soon after:
Space Invaders (Atari 2600)
Missile Command
Holy crap is this a joke?! Wow, expect some crappy re-releases etc for these this year.
Also, 30 years ago we got our hands on our first hand-held video games, The Game & Watch!
You could also play games on your Intellivision or ZX80 now that you had the systems.

Coming up next are the silver and golden anniversarry moldy oldies!

Oh and while we're at it I'd personally like to thank 1980 for forever blessing me. :)

2010 - 20

Part 2 of the 2010 future-retrospective is the 20th's.

So twenty years ago these movies came out. 20 years... meaning you (as I think I know everyone who will read this) were probably like maybe 10 when you saw these! To kids today these seem like 70's movies to you and me!
Home Alone
Total Recall
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Pretty Woman
Kindergarten Cop
Dick Tracy
Hunt for Red October
Wild at Heart
Back to the Future 3
Blind Fury
Days of Thunder
Edward Scissorhands
La Femme Nikita
Gremlins 2
Jacob's Ladder
Miller's Crossing
Predator 2
Problem Child
Quigley Down Under
Robocop 2 yuk!
Rocky 5
So remember that the next time you give shit to some kid for not having seen Quigley Down Under, remember that he probably wasn't even born when it came out. Oh and if that list doesn't hurt enough you should also be aware that the chicks from both the Twilight movies and Harry Potter series were BORN in 1990! Oh and also the little kid from Jerry Maguire. On a sadder note it will twenty years since we lost Jim Henson, Sammy Davis Jr, Greta Garbo, and Ava Gardner.

Now, you wanna talk music? Let's take a gander at 1990 in music...i'm sure there's some crap you jumped around to and strummed a badminton racket to in here.
They Might Be Giants - Flood
Bel Biv DeVoe - Poison
Depeche Mode - Violator
MC Hammer - Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em
Sinead O'Connor - I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got
New Kids on The Block - Step By Step
Mariah Carey - Mariah Carey
Dee-Lite - World Clique (which begat Groove is in the Heart)
LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
Vanilla Ice - To The Extreme
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
AC/DC - The Razors Edge
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Rush - Chronicles
Slayer - Seasons in The Abyss
KMFDM - Naive
C&C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat
The Simpsons Sing the Blues
Christ....I still dance along and strum my racket to a lot of those. The good news? Pearl Jam (under a different name) play their first gig together! The bad news? We lost Stevie Ray Vaughn in a helicopter crash. John Landis was not available for comment.

Alright nerds, twenty years ago you were blip blooping your time away with these instead of doing homework:
Super Mario Bros.3
Final Fantasy
Castlevania 3
Double Dragon 2
Dragon Warrior 4
Ninja Gaiden 2
Maniac Mansion (NES)
Super Spike V'Ball
TMNT2: The Arcade Game
Railroad Tycoon
King's Quest 5
Mega Man 3
Dr. Mario
Hugo's House of Horrors
Nibbles (on QBasic)
Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Wing Commander
and most importantly Commander Keen!
And if you really sucked at those NES games like I did you could now use a Game Genie as that popped up in 1990.
The Turbo Express, Super Famicom, and Neo Geo also came out in 1990.

I think I'll do 30's next and then the silver and golds as a finale... fifteenth isn't as much fun so don't expect it.

2010 - 10

As we close in on 2010, like I did for 2009 I want to point out some movies and music that are celebrating significant anniversaries. Since a huge list loses its impact I'm gonna do this in parts and the first part will be the 10's. This isn't so much to make you feel old but is rather to make you think about how fast time goes. Of course, if you do want to feel old just as a teenager about some of this stuff and see if they've even heard of it!
On with the list!

Here are some movies celebrating their 10th anniversaries:
Meet The Parents
Erin Brockovich
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Bring it On
Battleshit Earth
Charlie's Angels
The Perfect Storm
Pitch Black
Scary Movie
Sexy Beast
Shanghai Noon
Shadow of the Vampire

From the same period in time some interesting albums and songs:
All those goddamn duets Santana did that are still over-played on the radio are 10 years old in 2010
No Strings Attached - N'Sync
Oops! I Did it Again - Britney Spears
Christina Aguilera's debut album
Yes 2000 was the start of all that crap
The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx - Fishbone
Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
Minor Earth Major Sky - a-ha
Binaural - Pearl Jam
All That You Can't Leave Behind - U2

Now I didn't do this last year but I'd like to add Video Games that are OLD to the list. So here's 10 years ago in video games:
The PS2 came out in 2000
Diablo 2
Deus Ex
Icewind Dale
Chrono Cross
The Sims
Perfect Dark
Baldur's Gate 2
American McGee's Alice
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Escape From Monkey Island
No One Lives Forever
The Longest Journey
Banjo Tooie

The rest of the lists will be posted up later on so enjoy the decade past.

Google Voice Fail

So I tried signing up for Google Voice, and was told it's not available in my area, but it still let me enter my e-mail address for an invite when there was room on the network.  So late last night I got the e-mail and checked out the link today.  Of course, it directed me to a page that told me Google Voice is unavailable in my area, and is limited to the USA for now.  Way to go and pay attention to things Google!

Jesus Saves!

While searching for Gingerbread Woman Colouring Book Page for my wife, I came across this image from the Going 40 in a 20 Zone blog.  The image says it all.

Microsoft Security Essentials

What a stupid name for MS Anti-Virus!  I mean, really, just call it MS Anti-Virus!  I just spent 20 minutes, ON MICROSOFT SITES, to try and find and download this to try on my home PC.  Really Microsoft, I understand your hand was slapped by the EU when it came to bundling software, but you don't have to make it DIFFICULT for those of us who actually want to try something!  I mean, it's not even listed as an optional download in Windows Update, even though when Defender was available, it felt like it was crammed down our throats!  Yeesh!

Dec012009 Launches!

Hey everyone, my father-in-law has started his family tree on, a member of the group of websites.  Head on over to take a look.  It's just started, so there's only basic information on it, but it's really neat because the actual history of the Zolis family name can be traced back to a single person, an adopted child a few generations back!  If by chance you are a Zolis, or know a Zolis, have them contact my father-in-law to help him add to the list and expand it.  As you're well aware, family trees are continually evolving projects, so let's help him see how far we can take it!

My Name In Lights...Sort Of

Head on over to the GizWiz website to take a gander and my answer to last months What The Heck Is It contest...apparently, he found it funny enough to choose as a winner and send me a signed copy of the latest Mad Magazine!  While you're there, have a guess (educated or otherwise) as to the current WTHII item for your own chance to win!  Dick (the Giz Wiz) is a really swell guy, and you should keep track of him through his website, or his TWIT.TV podcast The Daily GizWiz.  You can also search for it on iTunes, or just follow him on twitter @thegizwiz or @alfredeneuman.
